Käthe Kollwitz

Around the seventies, I faced for the first time some of the drawings by Käthe Kollwitz. Later on I had the satisfaction of seeing some of her sculptures, but it was about seven years ago when I had the joy of contemplating in Cologne and in Berlin, in her own museum, a major part of her documents, sketches, drawings and sculptures. This contemplation and the knowledge of her work and the social and political moment when they were produced, as well as her own personal tragedy was what made me think, once again, about love in creation. One cannot create only with pain; love must exist, transforming pain in hope.

One day I decided, based upon some of her sketches, to make some paintings that being painted by me, they would have something of her and they would be a “reminder” of Käthe Kollwitz artist, a “memorandum” and not a tribute. Because I think that tributes have to be paid in life and reminders, post mortem.

Crucifixion is not the end, but the beginning of life.
